In the last couple of decades trauma treatment has evolved beyond traditional talk therapy. Among the most promising techniques are Neurofeedback and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and more recently Deep Brain Reorienting —three cutting-edge approaches gaining traction among clinicians and trauma survivors alike. All methods aim to rewire how the brain processes traumatic experiences, but they do so in very different ways.
Which Treatment Should You Choose?
We believe the right choice might depend on your own preferences, and how much you know about each therapy. What process do you prefer and what is your readiness to relive the traumatic event. EMDR does require engaging with the trauma memory, but much less so with DBR. In Neurofeedback treatment there is no requirement to engage with or discuss traumatic events.
Our Trauma Therapy Experience
We have combined experience with all of the above trauma therapies but favour Neurofeedback because of its gentle power in quickly relieving symptoms such as anxiety, flashbacks or nightmares. It also helps with the physical pain of trauma affect for example tight muscles or migraines. Neurofeedback is allowing your brain to recover at a deep level affecting the root of trauma and co-occurring conditions.
Neurofeedback is a form of brain training that uses real-time EEG (electroencephalogram) data to help individuals regulate their brainwaves.
- How It Works: Clients receive visual or auditory feedback based on their brain’s electrical activity. Over time, the brain learns to function in healthier patterns.
- Sessions Involve: Watching a screen or listening to music that responds to your brain activity while wearing EEG sensors.
- Clinical Backing: Supported by research in treating ADHD, anxiety, and trauma. We use it successfully to treat these issues as well as PTSD and a variety of other conditions.
Combining Neurofeedback & DBR in Trauma Treatment
We often integrate DBR into our later sessions of neurofeedback. As trauma specialists we find this useful where some clients wish to focus specifically on trauma memories. In these later sessions we are usually using the protocol called Alpha-Theta which helps you reach deep relaxation, aiding the DBR process.
