Help for Seizures Using Infra-Low Frequency Neurofeedback

by

Seizures can be scary, unpredictable and cause daily challenges.  Whilst medication is often the first response, there is another gentle, non-invasive and safe approach – infra-low frequency neurofeedback.   Neurofeedback is a way to tune the brain using sensors, computer, and advanced software which help train your brain to function better.  There are no drugs used and no electricity being sent into your body.

People with seizure disorders often have a brain that’s very reactive or unstable and ILF neurofeedback can help by:

  • Stabilizing brain activity
leading to less chance of sudden spikes that lead to seizures
  • Calming the nervous system
balancing the brain, keeping is in a less stressed state
  • Improving self-regulation
training the brain to learn how to avoid patterns that trigger seizures

It’s like helping the brain remember how to stay calm and steady, even under pressure.

Our sessions are straightforward and relaxing:

  1. We’ll place sensors on your head (no pain, no electricity — the sensors are just listening!)
  2. You’ll watch a movie or animation on a screen.
  3. The movie changes slightly based on your brain activity — this gives your brain helpful feedback.
  4. Over time, your brain learns from this feedback and becomes more stable.

There’s no effort required!  You don’t have to try hard or think hard – your brain does the learning behind the scenes.

With brain instabilities like seizures, its common and natural to be wary of any intervention.  But we can say with some confidence that yes neurofeedback is safe.  In our practice we work with seizures and have known it to help reduce frequency, intensity and duration of seizures.  It is non-invasive and drug-free and often used with adults and children, including those with epilepsy, brain injuries, autism, and more.

We haven’t yet eradicated seizures completely, but our clients do report the improvements mentioned above and an overall better quality of life.  This can sometimes take several sessions.  Infra-low frequency neurofeedback offers hope — it helps the brain become more balanced and less likely to misfire.
