What to Expect in an ILF Neurofeedback Session

by

If you’re looking for non-invasive, drug-free ways to support brain health and emotional regulation, Infra-Low Frequency (ILF) Neurofeedback might be the solution you’re looking for. Whether you’re new to neurofeedback therapy or considering it for a specific condition like anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, or brain injury, we hope this information will take you through exactly what to expect during your session with us.

But first What is ILF Neurofeedback?

ILF Neurofeedback is a cutting-edge technique in the field of brain training that helps your brain regulate itself better. It works by detecting ultra-low-frequency brainwaves and providing real-time feedback, allowing your brain to make subtle but powerful adjustments for improved function.

Unlike traditional neurofeedback, ILF focuses on frequencies below 0.1 Hz, which are crucial for core regulatory functions like sleep, mood stability, attention, and stress resilience.

Key Benefits of ILF Neurofeedback

Many people turn to ILF neurofeedback to help with:

  • Chronic anxiety and stress
  • Sleep disorders
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Attention and focus (including ADHD)
  • Mood regulation (depression, irritability)
  • Migraines and chronic pain
  • Peak performance and mental clarity

What to Expect – Initial Consultation

Our enquiries often ask about what to expect during a session: we conduct an Initial Consultation and in this visit we get to know you and your needs. We’ll discuss your symptoms, expectations, medical history, and any previous therapies you’ve tried. This helps create a personalised neurofeedback protocol. You might let us know about your health goals whether it’s reducing anxiety, improving sleep, or enhancing cognitive performance. In this first session we can also run a bio-resonance assessment if you wish, but the main focus will be on starting Neurofeedback; we do this with a 10minute session.

Starting ILF Neurofeedback

1. Sensor Placement – a main feature

Small sensors are placed on your scalp using a cleanser and paste to attach securely. These sensors monitor your brainwave activity. There’s no electrical stimulation at all!

2. Real-Time Brain Feedback

We hope you find a warm and welcoming environment, where you’ll sit comfortably, with feet up to watch a feedback animation on a large screen. During this screening the picture will respond to your brain’s activity. When your brain moves in a more regulated direction, the video or sound subtly changes, reinforcing the pattern that your brain is learning to make.

3. Passive Participation

There’s no effort required on your part—your brain does the work, learning to optimise itself through the feedback loop. Most of our clients experience some sensations or feelings during, or not long after a session. These can be calmness or mental clarity, deeper sleep the following night, emotional processing or insights, temporary fatigue or emotional release (all of which are normal elements of brain training). We’ll always monitor your progress throughout the session and ask for a short email report the day after.

4. Session Duration and Frequency

Sessions usually last about 40 –  50 minutes. The amount you might need largely depends on the issues being addressed but we’d recommend planning for no less than 10 and more likely that 20 sessions will be required and ensure maintenance of the changes.
