The Body Keeps the Score
Bessel van der Kolk is a psychiatrist and trauma researcher and has played a prominent role in exploring neurofeedback as a trauma treatment. In his book, The Body Keeps the Score, he emphasises that trauma is not only stored as a memory, but is also reflected in patterns of brain activity, emotional regulation, and bodily responses.
This impact of trauma isn’t always easily accessible for change, but neurofeedback can help. Neurofeedback is a form of brain training that provides individuals with real-time information about their brainwave activity. By receiving feedback through visual or auditory signals, people can learn to regulate brain activity patterns associated with stress, anxiety and emotional dysregulation. As Bessel van der Kolk states in his famous book, trauma can disrupt the brain’s ability to maintain calm, focus, and self-awareness, and neurofeedback may support the restoration of these functions.
It is often after reading his book, that clients come to us, having explored many other therapy options. We regularly see very positive outcomes, including improvements in emotional stability, attention, sleep, social connection and overall well-being.
